SASHA SABEN CALLAGHAN

Lime-house Reach

This image is layered, surrealist, photographic collage.

Framed, in a similar fashion to Sasha Saben Callaghan’s previously included collage “That Summer” (meaning that then entire image is inside a created frame inside the image being looked at) a young woman with starkly blue eyes, shockingly white hair and skin, and a white tunic-dress, stands in the left-hand corner of the frame. She is making eye contact with her viewer, seemingly very aware of being looked at. Her expression is exceptionally neutral. A map of varying docks and ports, overlaying an image of a dilapidated wooden dock fills the frame behind her. There are butterflies nestled in her clothing and butterfly wings visible, falling from her shoulders. She seems to be some sort of butterfly/fairy creature. The bottom right-hand corner of the frame, bursting out of the corner, shows a miniature pile of colour co-ordinated books in greens and teals, tied together with a ribbon, and a small bird resting on top. The image feels serene although the eyes of the woman are somehow haunting.
